Bishel Dragon Colors

The color of a Bishel dragon often indicates its magical inclination.  Both the Machesri and Hirgyae clans develop their color inside the egg before hatching, so the environment in which an egg is incubated influences the magical abilities that dragon will develop.  For this reason, Bishen Realm attempts to adopt out eggs as early as possible in development, so that the egg's caretaker and new home have the most influence over the developing wyrm.

Color is generally a result of the physical environment an egg is kept in.  For eggs that are kept on the move or that are surrounded by an environment lacking in natural, elemental magic, color can be the result of the personalities the incubating dragon comes into contact with.  The egg's caretaker or bondmate can be extremely influential.

An uncommon or rare coloration is a considered a mutation, but the rarity of colors differs between clans such that a common color in one clan may be a mutation in another.

Color Variations

Even among individuals of the same color, there is some variation.  Also, color differs between clans.  For example, a color considered dark or dusky in the Machesri might be completely normal in the Hirgyae.

Some of the named color variations:

  • Dark – a darker version of a color; magic more grounded or dark/evil
  • Dusky – a less saturated version of a color (more gray); magic more defensive or unobtrusive
  • Glossy – a more saturated version of a color (more brilliant); magic more aggressive or flashy
  • Light – a lighter version of a color; magic more ethereal or light/good
  • Pale – a very light version of a color, lighter than “Light”; magic good or more celestial
  • Sooty – a very dark version of a color, approaching black, darker than “Dark”; magic evil or related to heavy earth

Colors

Albino

This is not a color but rather the absence of all pigmentation.  Albino dragons appear white with pink eyes.  They have no affiliations.  Magically, they can be considered blank slates.  Albinos can be withdrawn and listless and require special care.  They are very sensitive to sunlight and prone to burning.  Note that this is a very rare mutation, completely recessive to all other colors.

Black

Black dragons are deep black with gray scales.  Dragons of this color enjoy solitude and are fiercely territorial, even attacking members of their own clan.  They rarely bond and usually have no friends or mate, preferring to guard their lairs.  Blacks are also compulsive hoarders.  In the Machesri clan, Blacks are feared as unpredictable and unreasonable.  Hirgyae, however, consider Black dragons to be excellent and fearless leaders in battle.  Black dragons often learn attacks that deal with darkness, cold, or negative energy.  More advanced skills include energy transfer, darkening of the skies, and changing of the climate.

Black dragons are common in the Hirgyae clan and rare in the Machesri clan.

Blue

Blue dragons are blue with lighter blue scales.  They are swift and silent and often have a strong link to the wind and water.  Blues are known to develop powers of cleansing, both mind and body.  Some also have the ability to sense danger or dark powers, and Hirgyae Blues are known for being able to alter the memory of another being.

Blue dragons are common in both the Machesri and Hirgyae clans.

Buckskin

Buckskin dragons are creamy tan with black pointing on their legs, tails, and muzzles.  They have darker scales.  This coloration is very rare and nearly always the result of magical manipulation.  Buckskin dragons tend to be unobtrusive and calm.  They find themselves compelled to spend time alone and are keen observers.  Their magic lies in their ability to discover hidden truths, their insight, and their innate sense of direction.  They make excellent guides, investigators, and sages.

Brown

Brown dragons are brown with darker scales.  They are associated with decay and the return of materials to the ecosystem.  Because of this, Brown dragons have a strong link to the death and rebirth cycle.  They deal in time, cycles, and boundaries.  These dragons can learn many powerful skills, but they are considered mysterious.  Browns are likely to become sages and recluses.

Brown dragons are rare.

Divine

Divine Bishel dragons are a rare and wondrous mutation.  These dragons come from bloodlines considered blessed by the Bishel goddess Gratira.  Divine dragons have feathered wings and develop colors relating to metals and gemstones.  The magical inclinations of Divine dragons are variable, but most Divine dragons have very strong magical abilities.

Divine dragons are rare in the Machesri and almost unheard of in the Hirgyae.  This is because the Bishel god Aritarg is the patron god of the Hirgyae clan and does not like other deities meddling with them.

Ember

Ember dragons are a bright orange-red with darker, redder scales.  Embers are brought about by the brief period of time before an environment slides into dormancy.  Autumn and sunset are times that are affiliated with this coloration, but environments such as a dying fire or a volcano settling after an eruption also suffice.  Ember dragons have a natural ability to blend into the background unless they choose to be seen.  Like their White and Black cousins, Embers are solitary and often prefer to remain unnoticed.  While not vicious, they can be manipulative if necessary.  Ember dragons often develop powers relating to invisibility, illusion, and deception.

Embers are a rare mutation.

Green

Green dragons are green with lighter green scales.  These dragons have an affinity for plants and the soil, and many Greens spend time caring for intricate gardens or cultivating useful crops.  They enjoy spring and summer and may hibernate during the winter.  Green dragons are known for powers of healing and regeneration.  They also have a reputation for cheerfulness and a charming ability to relax others.  More advanced skills include controlling plants, creating illusions from light, and harnessing the energy of the sun.

Green is the most common color in the Machesri clan.  It is very rare among the Hirgyae.

Grey

Grey dragons are grey with lighter scales.  They are sometimes seen as a dilute version of Black, but this reputation is not accurate.  Grey dragons are solitary and silent, with an uncanny ability to blend into the background.  They make excellent infiltrators and spies.  The magic of Greys often revolves around invisibility, illusion, and obscuring the truth.  They are less violent than most colors, but they make up in device and cunning what they lack in viciousness.

Grey is rare in the Machesri clan and uncommon in the Hirgyae clan.

Ice Shard

Ice Shard dragons are dark, deep blue with icy, pale, reflective scales.  These dragons love cold climates.  They are moral and high-minded in nature.  They will often follow strict religious codes or create moral frameworks for themselves.  Ice Shards are deeply in tune with the world around them, and they often become crusaders for justice.

Ice Shard is a rare mutation.

Midnight

Midnight dragons are the dark blue of the night sky with darker, shiny scales, and they are one of the colors that is almost always triggered by the influence of other beings rather than environment.  Midnight dragons always have a brilliant white star in the center of their foreheads.  This star only diminishes in brightness when the dragon is sick or injured.  Midnight dragons are the psychic mediums of the dragon world.  They walk between the world of the living and the world of the dead.  These dragons, preoccupied with a world beyond ours, are often loners.  They are naturally able to battle and defend themselves on the spiritual plane.  The drawback to their psychic abilities is that they often attract spirits unintentionally, both bad and good, and they are frequently charged with helping spirits complete unfinished business.  One idiosyncrasy of this coloration is that it will follow one of two extremes in relation to belongings.  Either it will obsessively hoard objects, or it will completely renounce worldly goods.

Midnight dragons are rare.

Moonstone

Moonstone dragons are light teal with a multicolored sheen, with scales of reflective purple and green.  Dragons of the Moonstone coloration represent good fortune to sailors and are considered extremely lucky.  They have an affinity for the sea, and the coloration can be triggered by ocean or air voyages.  The magic of Moonstones is often associated with the ocean, luck, or visions.

Moonstone is fairly uncommon in the Machesri and very rare in the Hirgyae.

Mountain Haze

Mountain Haze dragons are a grayish purple with lavender scales.  Like the fogs that roll through mountain valleys, Mountain Haze dragons are mysterious and nebulous.  Legend tells us that they are silent, like the Blue, but they also have the great strength of the Red.  These dragons are said to have a connection to the peaceful rolling hills and valleys where the fog descends each morning.  They are best in twilight, mist, and dawn.  Mountain Hazes are peaceful and loyal, able to endure hardship in order to ensure the safety of their clan.  In old legends, they are often Kailans, sages, or mystics.

Mountain Haze is uncommon in the Machesri and rare in the Hirgyae.

Nightsky

Nightsky dragons are a uniform, inky black. Their hides and scales absorb light and reflect very little, making them deep black, even in broad daylight. Moving reflections of space elements, such as stars, nebulae, and planets populate their back and belly scales. Each dragon has its own set of celestial bodies that travel through its scales, although the contents can change as the dragon grows. Nightsky dragons are inspired by the void and the dark energy moving through it. They can develop powers relating to teleportation and repelling objects. Some also explore phasing through matter, time, or space. These dragons need lots of space and do not feel comfortable staying planetside for long. Many also suffer from claustrophobia or, at the very least, hate feeling confined.

Nightsky is rare in all clans.

Profane

Profane Bishel Dragons are very rare.  These dragons come from bloodlines blessed by the Bishel god Aritarg, although some Machesri suggest they are perhaps cursed by other deities.  Profane dragons always have multiple sets of limbs and expanded torsos.  All Profanes have sharp horns, spines, and talons, and they may also have armor, fangs, spikes, blades, or other weaponry mutations.  Instead of a set coloration, Profane dragons have a theme that sets coloration and type.  Profane dragons are always very strong, and many can learn new skills without the aid of magical objects.

Profane dragons are rare in the Hirgyae and almost unheard of in the Machesri.

Red

Red dragons are warriors.  They have an affinity for heat, fire, and deep earth.  Dragons of this color often have great reserves of strength and energy, and they are known for fighting to protect their allies.  Skills such as land formation and fire elementals can be mastered by the most advanced Red dragons.

Red is the most common color in the Hirgyae clan, and it is fairly common in the Machesri clan as well.

Sea Splash

Sea Splash dragons are aqua with lighter and bluer scales.  Sea Splashes are a new color mutation thought to be a mix of Blue and Green.  They appear on heavily vegetated shores, islands, marshes, or other environments rich in earth, wind, and water elements.  They are quiet and caring by nature, and Sea Splashes are especially suited to tending others.  These dragons make excellent healers, for both creatures and plants, and they are often strong empaths.

Sea Splash is an uncommon mutation in the Machesri and rare in the Hirgyae.

Sunshine

Sunshine dragons are golden yellow with lighter cream scales.  These dragons are almost always of the arboreal type.  Upon their foreheads grows a glowing jewel that is used to absorb and store energy from the sun.  This coloration needs sunlight to survive and will become extremely ill when taken away from it.  Sunshine dragons are very outgoing and social.  They are loved by all and bring sunshine to the lives of any they encounter, both literally and figuratively.  Sunshine dragons can provide light by glowing brightly.  They often have the power to raise the spirits of others and are universally cheerful.  Sunshines rarely cry.  If they do, the tear forms as a gem droplet.  These tears are said to bring good luck and happiness to any who wear them.

Sunshine dragons are rare in the Machesri and almost unheard of among the Hirgyae.  There is only one Sunshine Hirgyae, and no one has any idea how he came about.  Suspicion falls on extremely powerful magic or the intervention of deities.  Among the Hirgyae, he represents chaos and the unclean.

White

White dragons are white with pale blue scales.  Whites should not be confused with Albinos, which lack all pigment.  These dragons are the daydreamers, idealists, and poets of Bishel society.  They are lovers of solitude and creativity.  Books, stories, music, movies... anything with a story to tell is bound to find a place with a White dragon.  Whites are not especially friendly, preferring to be alone or share their life with a select few.  They always live in places where people and disruptions won't bother them.  White dragon eggs are often laid in spring and are clearly white.  If a White egg is laid, it is usually given out at the Spring Festival in Bishen Realm.

White is uncommon in the Machesri and rare in the Hirgyae.
